What is a dental crown?
A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a custom-fitted covering placed over a damaged tooth. It restores the tooth's shape, size, strength, and appearance, providing protection and support.
Why might I need a dental crown?
Dental crowns are recommended for various reasons, including:
  • Tooth Protection: Shielding a weak tooth from further damage or decay.
  • Restoration: Repairing a broken or severely worn-down tooth.
  • Cosmetic Enhancement: Improving the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth.
  • Support for Dental Procedures: Supporting a dental bridge, covering a dental implant, or completing a root canal treatment.
What are dental crowns made of?
Crowns can be crafted from different materials, including:
  • Porcelain: Offers a natural appearance and is suitable for front teeth.
  • Metal: Provides durability and strength, commonly used for molars.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): Combines the strength of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain.
  • All-Ceramic or All-Porcelain: Provides excellent aesthetics without metal components.
How is the dental crown procedure done?
The dental crown procedure typically involves the following steps:
  1. Consultation: Assessment of the tooth's condition and discussion of treatment options.
  2. Tooth Preparation: Reshaping the tooth to accommodate the crown.
  3. Impression: Taking an impression for custom crown fabrication, at SmileKind we use a digital scanner to take the impression rather than messy and uncomfortable impression material..
  4. Temporary Crown: Placing a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made.
  5. Crown Placement: Cementing the permanent crown once it's ready.
Is the dental crown procedure painful?
Local anesthesia is used during the procedure to ensure you are comfortable and pain-free. After the procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort, but this is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
How long do dental crowns last?
With proper care and oral hygiene, dental crowns can last 10-15 years or even longer. Regular dental check-ups and good oral practices contribute to their longevity.
Can I eat normally with dental crowns?
Yes, once the crown is securely in place, you can eat a normal, healthy diet. However, it's advisable to avoid biting on extremely hard substances to prevent damage.
How do I care for my dental crowns?
Maintaining good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, is essential for the longevity of your dental crowns. Avoiding habits like teeth grinding and using your teeth to open packages can also contribute to their durability.
HOW MUCH DO DENTAL CROWNS COST?
The cost of your dental crown will depend on several factors including the type of crown, how many you might need and what other treatment may be done within your treatment plan.  At SmileKind dental crowns are completed by our Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and our Specialist Prosthodontist so you can rest assured you are in expert hands and will be provided with the highest standard of treatment.  Crowns at SmileKind typically start from as little as £1,200 and flexible payment plans are available (subject to status) allowing you to spread the cost of your treatment.
