Pre-appointment Information - Implant Placement
Before your appointment
Have a light meal before you arrive, unless instructed otherwise. As long as your medical history allows it, and if you’ve used the medication before with no concerns, please take 400mg of Ibuprofen approximately one hour before your appointment time. If you are unable to take Ibuprofen, that does not matter and the surgeon will discuss alternatives with you when you arrive.
You should inform the surgeon of any allergies you have and any medical conditions you have ever been diagnosed with, even if you believe that they are not relevant to your oral surgery treatment.
Take all your regular medications as normal, unless instructed otherwise.
Bring a list of any medications that you take, and if you have had any blood tests within the few days prior to your appointment, bring the results with you.
Patients having treatment under local anaesthetic alone may drive to and from their appointments.
Before the procedure
Upon arrival you will be seen by one of our Implant Nurses who will provide you with some pre-operative medications including an antibiotic drink (amoxicillin) and some a corticosteroid tablet called dexamethasone, this helps manage any post-operative inflammation and infection. The nurse will check you medical history and ask if you have previously had any adverse reactions to any of these medications. You will also be provided with some anti-microbial mouthwash and tooth brush to use prior to surgery.
Following the pre-operative medications you will be shown through to the clinical area to be prepared for surgery, this will involve us getting you comfortable and placing sterile drapes around you. We may also prepare the skin around your mouth using an antimicrobial disinfectant.
The procedure
You will initially be made numb with some small scratches in the gum as necessary. The surgeon will first ensure that you are completely numb before embarking on the procedure.
Once you are fully numb we will commence the procedure and place the implants gently and precisely into the bone. Once complete you will likely have some stiches around the site which will dissolve away within the next 7-10 days.
After the procedure
The surgeon will not discharge you until satisfied that there are no concerns such as bleeding. You will be provided instructions on how to take care of your mouth during the healing phase.
It is common to expect a small degree of discomfort after the procedure, which is normally readily controlled with simple painkillers such as Ibuprofen and Paracetamol which will be provided within your post-operative pack. Swelling, bruising and stiffness of the jaw are not uncommon.
You will be provided with a full explanation of possible post-operative complications and you will also be given an information sheet detailing this information for you to take home with you.
